Kim Rose Smith is a Miami-born storyteller, writer and actor whose stories have been published in every medium from onstage to on air, in podcasts, and in print nationally and internationally. She started out as a journalist for the Sun Sentinel, the second largest newspaper in South Florida, and as a runway model on South Beach.
Kim spent the last three years playing on stages in New York City. She created, wrote and performed a one-woman show off-Broadway on 42nd Street, Escape from Miami, which premiered to rave reviews before going on to Solofest in Los Angeles. She enjoyed acting in the East Village in double lead/supporting roles as a homicidal Claudia/Claudius and murderous mom in a gender-bent Hamlet adaptation. And in the theater district, Kim performed and wrote sketch comedy, after training at Upright Comedy Brigade. In indie films, she has enjoyed lead and supporting roles playing a gallerist, investor, detective and journalist.
In real life, Kim was a journalist in South Florida for the Sun Sentinel, writing feature stories on alternative energy, art and a controversial restaurant review (“Shrimp, Lies & Vinaigrette.”) She was also a regular contributor to The Superyachts annual book, Boat International global magazine and wrote interviews and profiles for PostMortem, the first newspaper for the newly revitalized South Beach. Short stories have also been published in The Miami Herald and online at Wraparound South, Smith Magazine, Medium and Yahoo!
Kim’s short story, Photo Finish, a memoir was published in the short story anthology The Moment (Harper Perennial, 2012) and featured on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. She went on to share this story on book tour throughout New England and New York City and then on The Moth Radio Hour & Podcast in 2020 and 2024 to over 500 radio stations and one million listeners.
Three of Kim’s one-act plays were performed in the Boston metro area. “Butter,” a comedic one-act play, was performed to a standing-room-only crowd at Backroom at the Burren. “Red Shoes” was produced as part of Barstool Stories dinner theatre (theatre in bars) in 2017. Kim also contributed to the development of Barstool Stories via marketing, PR and playbill design for the show, drawing on her earlier career experience as Director of Marketing for the largest chain of art galleries in the US (Fidelity Capital) and District Manager for Cartier Eyewear for all of Canada.
Growing up in the multicultural, multilingual melting pot of Miami exposed her to a multitude of Latin and global cultures and languages, which have influenced both her work and life. She spent many summers in Switzerland, where her mom was born, speaking French, her first language, and developing a love for all things literary. (Her mom spoke five languages; her grandmother, seven.) Kim supports her theatrical and shoe habits by working as an award-winning global naming strategist as NameGirl. Kim is also the very proud mom of three amazing GenZ citizens and scholars who have been recognized for their hard work in careers in service of others, as they strive to make this crazy world a better place, after all, for all.
